How to Decide What to Consign

Clothes
Sort through your clothes and put them into piles.  It’s like sorting laundry but hopefully you will make some money
  on one of these piles!
  1. Keepsake Pile - Put the clothes that you want to keep in this pile-coming home outfit, baby dedication outfit, etc.
  2. Donate Pile - Put the clothes that are too worn out to sell in this pile.  They may have small stains, small tears, or cheaper clothes that will not make much money consigning.
  3. Trash Pile - These clothes are too worn to donate due to large stains or tears.
  4. Consign Pile - These are all the clothes that did not fit into any of the other 3 categories.  This is your money pile!!!

Toys
Sort through your toys and put into piles.
  1. Trash Pile - Put the toys that are broken, have missing pieces, or worn out into this pile.
  2. Consign Pile - These are the toys that are working and still in excellent condition.

CLEAN ITEMS SELL FIRST - Here are a few tips!

Make sure your clothes are clean and wrinkle free!
  1. Dirty clothes will not sell!  Here are a few tips for stain removal.
  • GREASE STAINS: For dark spots on dark fabrics, use Dawn Dishwashing Liquid. Rub into the stain and wash as normal.  This trick almost always works-even for set in stains.  For stubborn stains, you may have to treat it twice.
  • YELLOW STAINS: Mix about ½ cup of dishwashing detergent (such as Cascade) with ½ cups of Clorox 2 (pink liquid) in about 1-2 gallons of water. Soak the stained item in the mixture for several hours, then wash as usual. This will work for other types of stains as well.
2.  Clothes that are wrinkle free sell better!
  • In order to make your items look their best use an iron or a wrinkle releaser on them.

Toys, Toys, Toys!
  1. All electronic toys must have batteries.
  2. All sports equipment must be clean and "like new".
  3. Bicycles should have tires aired up and a lack of significant tread wear.
  4. DVD's, CD's and video games must be in the original package without scratches.
  5. Board games and puzzles must be in the original package with all pieces.

Cleaning and Sanitizing!
There are two basic steps to cleaning baby toys and equipment:
1. Cleaning: That is, scrubbing with soap and warm water. It removes the grease and grime and washes off many germs.
You don't need to use anti-bacterial soap. Regular dish soap is fine.
2. Sanitizing: This is done with a sanitizing solution. It kills most of the dangerous germs. But the surface needs to be cleaned
before it's sanitized, since germs can hide in grease and grime. An inexpensive, effective and safe sanitizing solution can be
made from diluting household liquid chlorine bleach—1 tablespoon of bleach in 1 quart of water or ¼ cup of bleach in a
gallon of water. Properly diluted bleach is considered non-toxic and safe for cleaning children's equipment since the chlorine
evaporates within minutes. You can also use other approved sanitizing solutions if the label states they are non-toxic. Be sure
  to follow the directions carefully.

There are different ways of cleaning and sanitizing toys and equipment, depending on the size and the type of material.
Small plastic toys:
  • In the dishwasher: Plastic toys that don't have batteries can be easily washed in the dishwasher with dish detergent and hot water. This cleans and sanitizes them.
  • By hand: If you don't have a dishwasher, you can wash plastic toys in the sink with a clean sponge or rag, soap and warm water. Be sure to scrub off any dried food, grease and grime. After washing, sanitize the toys by dipping them in the diluted bleach solution, and let them air-dry in a dish rack. For toys with batteries, clean the outside with soap and water, then wipe with the bleach solution and let air-dry.

Larger plastic, metal or wooden toys and equipment:
  • Clean the surface with soap and water, then wipe with the diluted bleach solution and let air-dry.
Fabric toys and equipment:
  • Wash in the laundry with laundry soap and hot water.
